My first job was working in a hardware store...got laid off.
Next I had a job in an electronics superstore...more secure...nah...got laid off...but they said they'd call me soon...stopped waiting long ago.
After a long while I took a job in construction doing insulation in new homes...had no choice...hated it...quit after 3 months (2 weeks later they laid off a bunch of guys I worked with!).
I was seriously thinking of joining the military service when I saw an ad for paramedic training.
I figured it was worth a shot. I like helping people and I even considered being a doctor when I was in high school.
So I checked it out; basic requirement high school graduate...check, first classroom training then a mix of on-the-job and classroom training...check, 2 years to get to an EMT-4 full paramedic...oh oh, but you do it while you're working, with pay...oh! check check.
I'm half way through now and working on my EMT-3 level.
Reality check: work hours 40 to 60 /week, shift work, stressful at times, some heavy lifting and, there will be blood.
With that said I can honestly say the money is getting steadily better, $30,000 now and a raise coming in 6 weeks. The benefits are great and my teem is...well...a bunch of really caring, good people.
All in all I gotta say I'm glad I got laid off from those other jobs because I really like being a paramedic and if you're sick of getting laid off too and you think you can hack it, you might want to check it out.
